Activities in the field of cross-cultural clinical psychology


September 2009 – June 2010
Partnership with the Razzetti Institute of Brescia, Italy, to implement the "Akron" project, funded by the Fondazione Comunità Bresciana, with the goals of:
• improving the psychosocial well-being of foreign communities in the city;
• promoting integration processes within the local population;
• advocating a clinical and civic culture that respects cultural differences.

The project entails implementing cross-cultural psychology services managed by Psychologists for the Peoples of the World, including the following activities: training Razzetti Institute's social workers; educating about cross-cultural clinical psychology issues for outside social workers; cross-cultural psychological counseling; cross-cultural psychodiagnostic assessment; cultural promotion and networking of local resources;

September 2009 to date
Psychological support for displaced foreigners in the Region of Lombardy due to the Abruzzo earthquake, at the request of Lombardy’s Department of Civil Protection;

September 2008 – September 2010
Partnership with the Municipality of Cremona (Italy) for the "Taking refuge in emotions” project. The project entails meetings with local professionals in refugee services to oversee giving them tools for understanding intercultural dynamics and relationships. The aim is to help professionals recognize the emotional experience of displacement and to manage intercultural relations with refugees, strengthening their capacity for action.

February - November 2009
Participation in the “Knots to untie” project, based on an agreement with “ALE G.” Association in Lomagna (Lecco, Italy). The project, financed by the Province of Lecco, offers family counseling services for migrant families in the district of Merate. The project was implemented by two psychologists under the supervision of Psychologists for the Peoples of the World.

Training in cross-cultural psychology

October 2010
Residential training seminar in cross-cultural psychology "Migration: from the journey to the encounter", aimed at fostering understanding of psychological, cultural, and socio-economic aspects of the situations of migrants during different stages of life. The course, created with the support of the Province of Trento and the Municipality of Luserna, involved 20 psychologists, teachers, social and healthcare workers, for a total of 16 lesson hours.

December 2009 – March 2010
Training course "Encountering each other: effort and opportunities", for volunteers of Caritas in Vimercate, implemented for the non-profit "Coordinamento volontariato zona di Vimercate", organized in eight three-hour sessions led by a team of teachers from Psychologists for the People of the World.

May 2009
Training seminar “Migrating, being somewhere else, being something else", for the students of the Adlerian School of Psychoterapy in Milan (Italy);

November 2008
Training course for psychologists and social workers providing psychosocial services in the Alto-Vicentino area, "Psychology and Migration: the encounter between cultures in clinical practice", conducted by the cross-cultural clinical psychology team of Psychologists for the Peoples of the World (16 hours);

May 2008
Two training days in cross-cultural psychology for psychologists and social workers in Lecco's psychosocial services;

February - April 2008
Training course "Migrate, being children in migration: social work with immigrant families", for social workers in the Municipality of Brescia (Italy). This 20-hour course was part of the 'Provincial Training Plan 2007”;

2007/ 2008
Implementation of "Psychological support for foreign women" project (4th edition) at the Family Center of the Municipality of Cremona (Italy). The project provided a space to listen to and give emotional support to foreign women, under the supervision of two psychologists from Psychologists for the Peoples of the World.
